We discuss Macular Degeneration
What is Macular Degeneration?
There are two forms of macular degeneration: one is called "dry" or age related degeneration, and the second is called "wet" or hemorrhagic. We will concern ourselves only with the former here because it comprises 90% of all cases.
This eye condition entails the impairment of the part of the retina that controls central vision. Specifically, the macula weakens and thins, a deterioration that occurs slowly, thereby increasing the chance for early detection and possible protection against the condition worsening.
The primary symptom for macular degeneration is a blurring or haziness of sight when looking straight (center), while the vision remains clear and sharp to the sides, or periphery.
What Causes Macular Degeneration?
The primary cause of macular degeneration is believed to be from free radical damage. Free radicals are highly reactive chemical substances that can harm the integrity of cellular material within the body, leading to premature disease and aging. Some of these free radicals may form in the retina due to a variety of reasons —- such as exposure to the sun, eating too much saturated fats, and smoking -- and then proceed to impair crucial cellular material that is responsible for the functioning of healthy vision.
In addition, it is believed that heart disease and diabetes may also contribute to age related macular degeneration: these diseases can restrict the flow of blood to important areas of the eyes. Blood carries vital nutrients needed to maintain clear and healthy eyesight, and fight free radicals.
Currently, there is no accepted medical treatment for age related macular degeneration.
Dietary and Lifestyle Steps to Combat Age Related Macular Degeneration
1. Cut back on foods high in saturated fats.
2. If you smoke, try to quit. Smoking can double your risk of this eye condition.
3. Always wear sunglasses outside, especially on bright days. (Blue eyed people are particularly sensitive to potential sun-induced damage, so the use of eye protection is paramount).
4. If you are not averse to it, drink a daily glass of wine, especially red. A large study showed that people who imbibed wine moderately had an almost 20% reduced risk for macular degeneration. It assists blood in flowing more easily, and also contains potent antioxidants. Antioxidants are powerful nutrients that can neutralize free radicals before they can cause damage.
5. Consume dark green vegetables such as spinach and collards, which are high in lutein and zeaxanthin, two nutrients vital for healthy eyes.
Nutritional Supplement Protocol to Combat Age Related Macular Degeneration
1. Lutein –- a carotenoid that acts an an antioxidant and also helps minimize the harmful effects of the sun's ultraviolent rays. The color of the macula itself, in fact, comes from this nutrient.
2. Copper –- needed because the mineral zinc can decrease its absorption, and thus cause a possible deficiency.
3. Bilberry –- In Europe, this nutrient is widely accepted and recommended for its broadly protective and therapeutic benefits for eye health. Studies have shown it to be beneficial for macular degeneration, cataracts, and poor vision. It has the ability to strengthen the blood vessels thru which nutrients travel to the eyes. It is also a powerful antioxidant.
4. Selenium – A powerful overall antioxidant mineral that will help neutralize free radical damage in the body, including the eyes.
5. Zeaxanthin -- a powerful nutrient that has been shown in studies to decrease the incidence of age related macular degeneration in individuals with high levels of it in their blood. It is found in high concentrations in leafy green vegetables, such as spinach.
